| | UAHuntsville's David Harwell nominated for prestigious LA stage alliance awards(10/30/2009)
David C. Harwell, assistant professor of Communication Arts and Theatre at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) was recently nominated for the 2008/2009 LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards.The Ovation Awards are the only peer-judged theatre awards in Los Angeles. The awards present an opportunity for the theatre community to join together and focus public attention on the city's performing arts scene. Harwell was nominated for the Scenic Design—Intimate Theatre category for the dark, romantic comedy Rantoul And Die. He joined UAHuntsville in 2005. Harwell earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Montevallo, and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Illinois. Harwell's research interests include theatre architecture, ancient Greek production techniques, the Realistic movement in theatre, 20th century stage design, theatre marketing, 21st century stage lighting techniques, southern playwrights, HB studio acting innovations. Harwell has taken UAHuntsville theatre students to New York to view stage play productions. Playwright Mark Roberts, who has worked as an actor, writer and stand-up comedian, wrote Rantoul And Die. In the past, Roberts guest starred on "Seinfeld," "Friends," "The Practice," and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Roberts and Chuck Lorre are the writer/producer creative team behind the CBS comedy hit "Two And a Half Men." The LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards voting season runs from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31 each year. Voters are Los Angeles theatre professionals who are chosen each season by the Ovation Awards Review Committee. The voting season culminates in a black-tie awards ceremony on Monday, Jan. 11, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center (Redondo Beach, Calif.).
