In addition to numerous articles and conference papers in these areas, he has published three books: Critique and Revision: Kafka's Reception of Mythological, Biblical, and Historical Traditions; Constructing China: Kafka's Orientalist Discourse; and Benjamin Today: Urban Discourse, Postcoloniality, and Flanerie between Cultures.

Goebel is the recipient of the Modern Language Association of America's William Riley Parker for Outstanding Article Published in PMLA, the association's journal of literary scholarship. His article was entitled, "Berlin's Architectural Citations: Reconstruction, Simulation, and the Problem of Historical Authenticity."
