| | UAHuntsville's Alumni Association Announces 2009 Alumni of Achievement Award Honorees(10/12/2009)The University of Alabama in Huntsville's Alumni Association selected the recipients of the 2009 Alumni of Achievement Awards. 2009 Alumni of Achievement Award WinnersWerner J.A. Dahm, Ph.D., Chief Scientist of the U.S. Air Force1979 UAHuntsville Graduate – BS, Mechanical Engineering Dr. Werner J.A. Dahm is the Chief Scientist of the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C. He has served on many advisory and review boards, including the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and the Defense Science Board. Dr. Dahm is currently on a leave of absence from his position as Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Head of the Laboratory for Turbulence & Combustion (LTC) at the University of Michigan. He has authored over 180 publications and presented over 220 presentations, and holds several U.S. Patents. Thomas Fender, Surgical Services Director, Huntsville Hospital 1980 & 1984 UAHuntsville Graduate – BS, Nursing, and MS, Nursing Thomas Fender is the Director of Surgical Services at Huntsville Hospital. Since he obtained the position in 2002, he has introduced a state-of-the-art patient tracking and management system to maximize communication, throughput and operational efficiency; he has established an active surgical operations committee; and he also led the planning and construction of five Orthopedic OR suites as well as an outpatient surgery center. Pam Hudson, M.D., Chief Executive Officer, Crestwood Medical Center 1986 UAHuntsville Graduate – Family Practice Residence, Primary Medical Care School Dr. Pam Hudson, a medical doctor, is the Chief Executive Officer at Crestwood Medical Center. She is a Board Certified Family Practitioner, and has certification in Medical Management from Tulane University, as well as Diplomat Status from the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. She has considerable experience in healthcare accreditation, physician credentialing, peer review, and performance improvement. William H. Leonard, Ph.D., U.S. Army and UAHuntsville Researcher 1968, 1981, & 1983 UAHuntsville Graduate – BS, Electrical Engineering (1968); MS, Industrial and Systems Engineering (1981); Ph.D., Industrial and Systems Engineering (1983) Dr. Leonard received his Ph.D. from UAHuntsville in Industrial and Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (ISEEM). He also holds a Master's degree in ISEEM and a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, both from UAHuntsville. He is currently a member of the DOD Laboratory Quality Enhancement Program Personnel Subpanel. He has won numerous awards throughout his career, including becoming a Distinguished College of Engineering Alumni Academy inductee at UAHuntsville, and receiving VP Al Gore's Hammer Award for implementing the Army's 1st personnel demonstration. Michelle M. Reavis, Enterprise Information Manager, Dynetics, and President of SNAP 1992 UAHuntsville Graduate – MS, Management Michelle Reavis is responsible for communication and collaboration as the Enterprise Information manager at Dynetics, a technology company located in Huntsville. She obtained certification in the Governance of Enterprise Information Technology (CGEIT) and is a Certified Knowledge Manager. She was the first graduate of the Management of Technology program at UAHuntsville in 1992. Along with her job at Dynetics, she is also a lecturer in the College of Business Administration at UAHuntsville, where she teaches management. Michelle served as Vice President of the UAHuntsville Alumni Association Board of Directors where she coordinated the on-campus Animal Planet Expo. She and her husband, Mark, have endowed the Mark & Michelle Reavis Leadership Scholarship. Henry Reyes, Chief of Police, Huntsville 1981 & 1996 UAHuntsville Graduate – BSBA, Management, and MA, Public Administration Henry Reyes is the Chief of Police for the Huntsville Police Department. He began as a reserve police officer in 1979 while enrolled at UAHuntsville as a Business Administration major. He became a full-time Police Officer in March, 1980. Chief Reyes also received a Master's Degree in Public Affairs from UAHuntsville in June, 1996. Chief Reyes advanced through the police department, and was named Police Chief in February, 2007. In addition to his police duties, Chief Reyes is also a member of the Alabama Army National Guard, where he holds the rank of Colonel and is currently serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel at Joint Forces Headquarters in Montgomery. Stanton Rowe, VP for Advanced Technology, Edwards Lifesciences 1975 UAHuntsville Graduate – BS, Biological Sciences Stanton J. Rowe served as President and CEO of Percutaneous Valve Technology Inc, which was acquired by Edwards Life Sciences in 2004. Before he worked at PVT, (which he helped to found in 1999), Rowe was Corporate Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning for Datascope Corp. He was Vice President of Business Development for Johnson & Johnson's Interventional Systems Division (JJIS), and was responsible for the company's coronary stent development efforts. Rowe joined Cordis after having held several positions in product management for various medical device companies. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from UAHuntsville in 1975. He also sits on the Board of Directors of both Remon Medical Ltd. and Biomerix Corp. Emily H. Vandiver, President, STAI-System Technology Associates, Inc., and Director, Applied Technology Initiatives Directorate (AMRDEC) retired. 1987 UAHuntsville Graduate – BS, Electrical and Computer Engineering Emily H. Vandiver is currently serving as the President of System Technology Associates, Inc. She also serves as a Voluntary Emeritus with the Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center (RDEC). Ms. Vandiver has authored numerous nationally recognized technical papers, reports, invited papers, and briefings. After serving as a Board Member and First Vice President, Ms. Vandiver was elected as the President of the UAHuntsville Alumni Association for 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. She created the Emily Vandiver Engineering Scholarship, and is currently serving as Chair of the Women's Leadership Council, a new innovative initiative for the University. Artro Whitman, Director, U.S. Army AMCOM Logistics Modernization Program At Redstone Arsenal 1976 UAHuntsville Graduate – BA, Sociology After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from UAHuntsville in 1976, Artro Whitman served in the U.S. Air force and was stationed in Austin, Texas. His civil service career began in 1979 when he was accepted into the para-trainee program as a supply specialist to the US Army Missile Command (MICOM) at Redstone Arsenal. Currently, he is the Command Lead for integrating the Logistics Modernization Program (LMP) activities across all functional organizations at the US Army Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the Superior Civilian Service Award in 2004 and the Ernest A. Young Logistic Achievement Award/Management in 2007. The Alumni of Achievement Award is the highest honor bestowed by the UAHuntsville Alumni Association. The award recognizes graduates who have distinguished themselves professionally and personally and who exemplify the high standards of UAHuntsville. Winners are selected by a committee from nominations made by alumni, faculty, and friends. To commemorate their achievement the award recipients will be honored at a luncheon and their names will be engraved on the Alumni Commemorative Pathway on the UAHuntsville campus.
