UAHuntsville faculty, administration, alumni and friends appear in the stage play The Rimers of Eldritch

(10/12/2009)

A brutal murder committed in a near deserted Bible-belt town is the setting for Pulitzer Prize winning author Lanford Wilson's play, The Rimers of Eldritch performed next month at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville).

The university's Theatre Department will stage the production in the Chan Auditorium (located in the Business Administration Building) Wednesday, Oct. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 18. Performances begin Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 15 through 17 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m. General admission is $10 and $5 for students with identification.

The play is under the direction of David Harwell, assistant professor of theatre in the university's Department of Communication Arts, and Patricia Ferrier Kiley, who has performed on Broadway in many productions. She is currently working as an acting coach and director.

The Rimers of Eldritch cast members include Jeff Sands, vice president of University Advancement; Julie Early, associate professor of English; and Amy Pugh-Patel, a UAHuntsville alumna and director of the Butler High School Theatre Company. Sands portrays Skelly Mannor, a rambling vagrant and social outcast who suffers ridicule and scorn from the town's Holy Rollers. Early is Mary Winrod, a senile woman who has the uncanny knack of predicting fatal events. Patel-Pugh is cast as Cora Groves, a lonely middle-age woman who owns a café and is scandalized by religious zealots in Eldritch for offering refuge to a good-looking drifter and hired hand.

Also cast in the play are Cam Scales, a well-known Huntsville actress who portrays the mother of a young physically challenged girl; and Jay Poff, programs planning manager at The Huntsville Arts Council, cast as the father of the Johnson family in the production.

Wilson's mystery takes place in the midwest during the late 1960s in a once booming coal town gone bust. The play focuses on the circumstances of the murder, and examines the hypocritical lives of the townspeople to find out who committed the violent crime.

The Rimers of Eldritch was adapted as a made for television movie in 1974, and broadcast for PBS as part of its Great Performances series. The movie version starred Susan Sarandon and Rue McClanahan.
